The U.S. customer GLS Group reports on its recent investment which has led to the installation of a Sitma system to automate the production process, ensuring 100% accuracy. Click on the link to read the entire article.
Sitma strengthens its position in Latin America by signing a deal with Peru-based Pacifico Editores, a leading publisher and book binder, for the supply of an high-speed polywrapping line model 1005 for magazines and books. This new machine is configured with the most advanced sealing systems, allowing to offer significant packaging services and several product presentations to the market. After an intensive analysis, Sitma was able to present the best packaging system in terms of flexibility and market leadership.
Sitma is proud to announce that on Drupa 2016, a long term Agreement was signed with the Management of Spotta (formally known as Netwerk VSP), Holland and PostNL, to whom the Dutch door to door distribution Company belongs, concerning the supply of a new generation high speed poly-bagging lines for unaddressed promotional leaflets as well as a planned replacement of all their existing twelve Sitma wrapping lines. Sitma’s relationship with Spotta began in 2000, when the first poly-wrapping line for the distribution of promotional flyers to individual households was supplied to their plant in Utrecht, followed by eleven further installations in subsequent years. These machines have been continuously producing since they were installed. Since then, Sitma have been working hard to develop new technology for this market, and thanks also to their experiences with other turn key customers in Europe and Northern America, have launched their new wrapping system including revolutionary new feeding technology. As Sitma COO, Fabrizio Della Casa explains: "Our aim was to offer not only higher efficiency systems but also professional consulting to help our Customers increase their performance and shorten their ROI." "This has given us the chance to use our experience and make it available to our customers as well as giving us the chance to work closely with them as industrial Partners to tackle the challenges for the next decade" Della Casa adds. This was the key, Sitma believe, the reason why Spotta renewed their trust with the signature on this Agreement. Della Casa continues: "We are grateful for this order and thank the Spotta and PostNL Management for reconfirming Sitma as their preferred supplier." "We also would like to thank all of our collaborators who made this success possible, with special thanks to our local Agent PARCO BV. , with whom we started supplying Spotta in 2000 and who has also been offering them professional service and support 24/7 during these years." https://youtu.be/uyH-zqMyf3Q

Sitma will host the industrial laboratories of the consortium Liam
The consortium Liam -Industrial laboratory for the automation of packaging machines- inaugurates in October 2015 its new premises in Spilamberto, near Modena. Sitma, historical company of Spilamberto, world leader in manufacturing in post-print processing for the publishing sector, packaging and distribution systems, makes an area of nearly 300 sqm available to the consortium Liam, to be used for offices and logistic services as well as for the use of common space. The very year in which celebrates the 50th anniversary of activity in the industrial automation sector, Sitma is very proud of hosting a research centre highly specialized in developing innovative technology for packaging processes automation. Sitma was established as a company producing machines for the packaging industry in general. Subsequently it has been specializing more and more in the processing of graphic products and obtained the leadership in this sector manufacturing machines and systems for newspapers, magazines, books and the mailing industry. Sitma is one of the founding members of Liam and has contributed from the very beginning to the research and development activities of the consortium. The Liam laboratory
Liam is an industrial laboratory of joint ownership. It has been established in 2011 for the research and development of technologies, innovative tools and equipments for the automation of packaging machines. The companies participating in the Liam project are: Ima Spa, Sacmi Scrl, Selcom Spa, Sitma Spa and Tetra Pak Packaging Solutions Spa. Moreover, the Departments of Electronics and Computer Science of Bologna University as well as the Department of Mechanics of Modena and Reggio Emilia University took part in establishing the laboratory. Today the Liam staff consists of 11 university graduates holding a degree in technical disciplines, mainly electronic engineers. At the beginning Liam was operating in the premises of CRIT in Vignola (a private company specialized in research and analysis of scientific-technical information and in research and development activities) but over the years the consortium has extended staff and field of activities to such an extent that the offices needed larger room. Nowadays, in the premises of Spilamberto, Liam has at its disposal rooms and structures which are suitable for the development of its potential. Sitma's role
“We are convinced that hosting the consortium Liam within our company site - Aris Ballestrazzi, Sitma President, explains – represents a surplus value to strengthen the competitiveness of our company and the whole territory. One of the targets of the consortium Liam is indeed to work not only for the companies involved but also for external customers and, thus, becoming a national and international reference for the solution of manifold technological matters in the field of automatic packaging machines. Thanks to the space within our structures, the well-organized logistics and the excellent position in our territory, we are sure that we will be able to contribute to the future activities of the laboratory to a considerable extent.” Aris Ballestrazzi - Sitma President “The presence in competitive and international markets requires continuous research activities aiming at innovations for which the consortium Liam and its networking are an important multiplier“, adds Fabrizio Della Casa, Sitma General Manager.

March 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Sitma’s founding. In 1965 the company started with a small plant in downtown Spilamberto, close to the local railway station.
Five decades later, Sitma Machinery is an international, multi-million euro business with 3 subsidiaries and 70 agents worldwide even if the headquarters are still located in Spilamberto in a new, futuristic plant.
Sitma's history is complex but in many ways it parallels the evolution of packaging technology, underlining an extraordinary capability of this company into adapting to new market needs and providing a window into how the industry and its services and products have changed.
"The 50 year anniversary scores an important milestone for the company as we look back on our incredible history of talent and accomplishments. Sitma is continually investing in new generations of talented staff through mentoring and education as we continue to push the limits of what Packaging technology can do," says Aris Ballestrazzi, President and co-founder of Sitma Machinery. "A key element of our success, and one that we are very proud of, is our long and enduring relationship with suppliers and customers."
In its present role as designer and manufacturer of complex systems, Sitma continues to exploit advances in technology. Apart from the new field of letterbox marketing, in which during these past years Sitma developed new solutions proving great success with customers, the main business today serves three market sectors, each of which is treated on a global basis with a complete range of high speed machines manufactured.
The largest covers finishing applications for Printed Paper market segment, followed by Intralogistic and General Packaging. A great effort has been made to identify a growth path to follow in the coming years to bring high technology innovation in mature markets.
Beyond system engineering, Sitma is known for ancillary services to further assist its clients to include support services and technical consulting.
"This is an important result but not the finish line." continues Aris Ballestrazzi, "We are now planning our next 50 years, together with a staff of both experienced and young motivated colleagues."
Group Chief Executive of Cambridge Assessment reports on his last visit at Sitma and Cambridge Assessment installation of new machines from Sitma.
Our Group Director of Operations and I took a quick trip to Italy at the end of January to visit SITMA near Bologna. SITMA manufactures the counting and verification machines which we use to envelope and address all of the 36 million question papers which we sent to 170 countries worldwide last year.
We now have three of these machines, each of which costs around £1 million and which have enabled us to reduce the numbers of people involved in what was previously a tiresome, lengthy and error prone process.
These machines were originally developed to bundle up and envelope flyers for insertion with Sunday newspaper supplements and we've worked closely with the Italian manufacturer over the last seven years to refine the technology, in particular, incorporating precision counting and weighing capability so that we can make sure we get the right number of papers in each envelope and can identify immediately any errors in packets being sent out to individual schools.
The Italian manufacturer was so proud of the innovation we developed together that they came to film a promotional video at our distribution centre, DC10, where the machines are housed. This is something we also like to include in tours when our various international customers come to Cambridge as it is a good illustration of the complex operational and logistical support functions that are needed to underpin our ability to deliver on our educational mission.
In contrast, the following day SITMA owner Signor Ballestrazzi (who is also a great gastronome) took us to visit a nearby artisan Parmesan manufacturing co-operative. This takes in milk from local herds milked that morning which then goes straight into their craft processing operation being turned within hours into enormous rounds of Parmesan through a process of heating, salting and compression (there are no other added ingredients except for the setting agents), before being left to dry out on wooden shelves in their warehouse. I estimated there were around 25,000 cheeses there of 38kg each which are required to mature for two years before they can be sold. Each wheel can sell for up to 420 euros and they are so valuable that a local bank offers to hold them as collateral on loans.
It is an eerie sight seeing long rows of cheeses stacked high on their shelves with a forklift truck with robotic attachments going up and down the rows turning the cheese to ensure they are aired equally on all sides.
This sort of factory is being squeezed out however by the march of big dairy companies and increased regulation from Brussels. There are also natural hazards - the 2012 earthquake led to large losses for manufacturers as warehouse shelves across the affected region collapsed, spoiling stock and creating an unusual health and safety hazard.
Of course it is difficult to protect against natural disasters such as earthquakes and although these are not a feature of East Anglian life, we did suffer disruption a couple of years ago when the Icelandic volcano exploded.
These sorts of natural calamities are difficult both to anticipate and protect against, but we have invested heavily over recent years in our logistics and distribution capability (which as recently as eight or nine years ago was housed in a series of small warehouses along the Newmarket Road in Cambridge) and although they are probably not earthquake proof, they are certainly much more resilient than they ever were in the past; proof we hope against most anticipatable problems, and an absolutely key element in our capacity to operate on a global scale and to deliver our educational mission.
We hereby inform you that Sitma will attend the Hunkeler Innovationdays exhibition to be held on February 23 - 26 at Messe Lucerne Exhibition facility, Lucerne, Switzerland.
